MINI GUIDE

ENERGY MEDICINE

Practice Discernment

Energy medicine can include a wide variety of different practices.

More scientifically oriented methods focus on:

-measurable electromagnetic fields such as The Heart Math Institute

-subtle energy phenomenon through the perspective of quantum mechanics and quantum physics

-the application of subtle energy practices through psychology such as David Feinstein, a clinical psychologist who applies physical interventions to regulate electrical signals or energy fields such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) a now clinically supported and evidence-based method

RED FLAGS

There are a lot of people who claim to be energy healers and will gladly drain your bank account. Discerning between what is snake oil and what is profoundly beneficial can be tricky. There are people regularly taking advantage of others, and the placebo effect is also a real phenomenon to keep in mind.

Some things to consider

-Energy work is not a magic pill. It often requires daily/regular use, just like brushing one's teeth or eating a healthy diet.

- In my experience, it is far more empowering and beneficial to invest in learning how to do energy work yourself, than to pay someone else to do it for you. It minimizes the risk of someone taking advantage of you, it's a skill you can use for the rest of your life, and it will be more financially affordable in the long run. Even basic energy work techniques can have incredible effects on one's health and one's life. Anyone can do energy work and use it as a healing tool.

-Energy medicine can be used WITH any treatment such as surgery and chemo.

-Be highly skeptical of any product that claims to "change" your energy. I like electrical grounding products aka earthing products because you can actually test their efficacy yourself with a common voltage meter.

-If you decide to hire someone to do any form of energy work on you, like Reike, get to know them first. Make sure they have a good reputation with a lot of experience. Call them/speak to them in person and ask them a few questions. Just hearing someone's voice can help us get an intuition/gut feeling about the situation. Hiring someone to do any kind of energy work should be taken with a lot of consideration. Chemistry is important. Some questions to ask could look like:

"Thank you for briefly speaking with me and answering a few questions to help me better gauge if this is a good fit for me. What inspired you to do energy work? How did you learn how to do this/who are some of your mentors?

-If someone gets annoyed, offended, or reprimands you for asking the above, that's a red flag. True and healthy energy healers do not gatekeep or hide their practice in any form. They are not "too busy" to take on a quick phone consultation if they are actively advertising 1-1 services or accepting clients.

-Practicing discernment and doing research also applies to learning how to do energy work. Does the program have a long-standing reputation? Are their multiple trainers involved?  Are they making this financially accessible/do they offer some free education? Are their values and beliefs compatible with mine?
